What's the deal with all these people that say 1977 was a horrible year for the Grateful Dead. To me it is the best, some of the best shows I have are from that year and the crap they started playing in the '80s started to make the stuff in the '70s fade away. Every now and then in the '80s you would hear a Bertha.

All what people? Never heard a discouraging word about 1977.

There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people..
You never see those people anyway.

There's nothing close to a universal consensus about any year among Deadheads, but I think 1977 and 1972 come about as close as you're going to find. The most common complaint about this year, as mentioned in another post, is probably that the setlist rotation was more limited than any time since the 1960s, and on paper the shows, especially those from the Spring and early summer, are virtually interchangeable. The playing, however, is another matter- a more focused, lazer-like intensity had replaced the more casual approach of the pre-hiatus era (a change driven at least in part by Mickey's retrun to the fold). The result was, if not the "best" year the Dead ever had, at least the most consistant in terms of the boys delivering the goods night after night.

Exactly.

Perhaps slightly repetitive set lists, but each show had those same tunes played a little differently. Just check the Eyes from 10/29 and compare it to 11/4. Only a few days apart but couldn't be more different. The first is a laid back version that is just too pretty, while the second is a steaming beast that has such an intensity it has been known to leave lesser men in shambles.

I always thought that the only possible downer regarding 77 was the amount of attention it was constantly getting. Not that it didn't deserve it, but other amazing years suffered as a result. When I first got into the boys, I was innundated with 77 shows. It took awhile for me to discover the magic that existed just about every year. Late 60's, Early 70's, Mid 70's, Late 70's, Early 80's...ah, you get the point.

First off who ever said that 'Sunrise' was a 'sit through' song is out of their mind. In my book it is musically great, gotta give Donna some credit. And ever since 77 the set lists have been repetitive, but who cares, every Dead show is 90% different and they alomst never played the same song two nights in a row. And ever since 77 they have played a Scarlet or a Fire or a Scarlet Fire every other night (disclude the 90s). So 77 has to be the start of the Dead we all know today.

no sir, you NEVER have to give donna credit. she never deserved it. oh, wait. gotta give her credit for leaving the band, albeit 7 years too late.

I wonder who's been saying anything negative about 77 - many including me have been praising that year again and again, the first who comes to mind is Grendelschoice, you must have heard about 10-29-77 by now!! He just wrote a great review about that show, too, which I always wanted to second, but never did so far. This was after C.M. did an amazing upgrade some weeks ago.

Talking about 77, this one is outstanding and not mentioned that much!

77 setlists are repetitive. no china riders, and you have to sit through some sunrises. other than that, pretty damn good year. a few dark stars woulda been nice, but oh well.
